The Sunday Book Shuffle: July 31, 2016

Time for another “Sunday Book Shuffle”! Don’t know what the Sunday Book Shuffle is? Find out here!

Shuffled Song: Rock and Roll by Eric Hutchinson

“If they wanna rock they rock
If they wanna roll they roll
They can roll with the punches
Long as they feel like they’re in control
If they wanna stay they stay
If they wanna go they go
They don’t care how they get there
Long as they get somewhere they know oh no
Ah na na na na na na na na na na na…”
Book: The Incredible Adventures of Cinnamon Girl by Melissa Keil

Why This Pairing:

So even before looking at the lyrics for Rock and Roll by Eric Hutchinson, the melody and overall sound of the song instantly made me think of The Incredible Adventures of Cinnamon Girl. The melody is fun and quirky which I think is perfect match for main character Alba’s creative and energetic personality.

Now the lyrics. The characters of the book don’t match up perfectly with the subject characters of the song but the song’s overall theme of two people staying in their comfort zones until BAM! unexpectedly, the unexpected happens when they meet each other. This reminded me of Alba’s desire for her small town and life to stay the same and not have to deal with all the changes that are happening around her as friends prepare for college, an old friend comes back in town for a visit, and oh, yeah, the world might be ending.

However, like the song, when Alba takes a chance unexpected things happen that go beyond her earlier expectations. So, that’s why I thought Rock and Roll could be a loose theme song for The Incredible Adventures of Cinnamon Girl.

So yeah! That’s this month’s Sunday Book Shuffle! Let me know what book you think of when you hear/read the lyrics of Rock and Roll by Eric Hutchinson.
