PERSONAL UPDATE

Howdy y’all! Currently spending part of my spring break in Dallas, Texas with my friend and her family. It’s such a nice warm change from Chicago’s ever fluctuating weather patterns. I don’t want to go back to the cold!!!

giphy1

Anywho, the last quarter was rough. With juggling seeing 8 clients, navigating metaphorical bumpy paths with a few friendships, going to class, one emotionally and mentally draining weekend long group dynamics focused conference, finding an internship position for the next academic year, struggling with the lack of multiculturalism in my program, and dealing with my share of seasonal affective disorders (or I guess commonly known as seasonal depression or “the winter blues”) I had a lot going on. I would be lying if I didn’t say that this quarter seriously made me question if I was cut out for mental health counseling. Not because of a lack of desire to do so but because it requires a lot of putting aside your pride and certain expectations and just being with the person as they learn to work through and identify areas of their life that they struggle with. Despite certain points of uncertainty, I’m really humbled by and appreciative of the experiences I’ve had so far this quarter. tumblr_nujo9htfnr1ufyftyo1_500

On a more exciting note, my birthday is coming up soon! Turning 24. I don’t know if there’s any song about turning 24 but I’m one year closer to officially saying I’m having a quarter life crisis (I say this like I haven’t had them already…)! Still working out exactly what I want to be doing for my big day but I’m just happy that I have people in my life who want to spend the day with me and I think that’s the best gift I could ever get!19205880

“WHAT ARE YOU READING?”

Lots of graphic novels/comic books apparently…

“The Flintstones Vol: 1” by Mark Russell and Steve Pugh

61uhw6gpcul-_sx323_bo1204203200_“Hanna-Barbera has created some of the most recognizable animated characters of all time. As part of DC Comics’ re-imagination of cartoons like SCOOBY-DOO, THE FLINTSONES, JOHNNY QUEST, SPACE GHOST, and WACKY RACERS, these new series will be infused with modern and contemporary concepts while keeping the heart and soul of the classic animation.

Fred and Barney reunite for Mark Russell’s modern take on Hanna-Barbera’s most famous stone-age family!

Welcome to Bedrock, where Paleolithic humans head to dinner for a taste of artisanal mammoth after shopping at Neandertall & Big Men’s Clothing, where Wilma shows her modern art, and where, if you take a plane, you could end up sitting on the literal tail section. See Fred, Wilma, Pebbles, Dino, Barney, Betty and Bamm-Bamm as you’ve never seen them before in THE FLINTSTONES VOL. 1.

THE FLINTSTONES has garnered significant critical acclaim for its modern take on the iconic Hanna-Barbera prime-time animated series. This darkly hilarious title cast an acerbic eye on issues like consumerism, religion, politics and relationships that’s both distinctly twenty-first century and uniquely the Flintstones!

The critically acclaimed creative team of Mark Russell (PREZ) and Steve Pugh (ANIMAL MAN, SWAMP THING) set out to turn a beloved classic cartoon into a modern graphic novel masterpiece with THE FLINTSTONES VOL. 1, which collects THE FLINTSTONES #1-6.”

“Mystery at Maplemead Castle (Book 2 of the Chapelwick Mysteries) by Kitty French

51mq-xanjal-_sy346_“Welcome to Chapelwick, a leafy English town in the hills of Shropshire, where chocolate pecan cookies come with a helping of sabotage. Maplemead Castle is crawling with ghosts, and the new owners need them gone. When Melody Bittersweet and the Girls’ Ghostbusting Agency arrive on scene, they quickly identify the troublemakers swinging from the chandeliers… literally. A century ago, stunning trapeze artist Britannia Lovell plunged to her death, and has done every night since. But did she really just fall, or was there something more to her demise? Forced to work with Leo Dark, her scoundrel ex, and infuriating, irresistible reporter Fletcher Gunn, Melody’s investigative powers are under strain (i.e. lost in a pink mist of lust and confusion). She needs her team on top form, but best friend Marina’s cake pipeline goes AWOL, assistant Artie’s distracted by a giant sausage roll, and the pug is scared witless by a lion. Somewhere, hidden in the castle, is a heart-breaking secret, but what will it take to find it? And is there a chance it could set Britannia free, or is she doomed to repeat her last fateful act forever? An utterly hilarious, gripping, spooktastic read for fans of HY Hanna, MC Beaton, Gina LaManna and Jana DeLeon.”

“Batman: Night of the Monster Men (Rebirth) by Tom King, Steve Orlando, Tim Seeley, James Tynion IV, and Riley Rossmo

51-jns-hm5l-_sx317_bo1204203200_“It’s the storm of the century, and it’s headed straight for Gotham City. The guardians of this sprawling urban center—Nightwing, Batwoman and the Batman himself—think they’ve prepared for the worst.

They have no idea.

Thanks to the machinations of the macabre scientist Dr. Hugo Strange, the storm has unleashed a rain of monsters upon the city. Colossal creatures are stomping through the streets, terrorizing the citizens and challenging the skills of even Gotham’s greatest heroes.

Can the Dark Knight and his allies stem the tide of destruction? Or will the Night of the Monster Men mark the fall of the Bat?

Find out in BATMAN: NIGHT OF THE MONSTER MEN, the first crossover of the DC Rebirth era from the creative team of Steve Orlando (MIDNIGHTER), Tom King (BATMAN), Tim Seeley (BATMAN ETERNAL), James Tynion IV (DETECTIVE COMICS), Riley Rossmo (CONSTANTINE: THE HELLBLAZER), Roge Antonio (BATGIRL AND THE BIRDS OF PREY) and Andy MacDonald (THE NEW 52: FUTURES END). This epic of horror and heroism collects BATMAN #7-8, NIGHTWING #5-6 and DETECTIVE COMICS #941-942.”

“Himself” by Jess Kidd

51zbr4gl0ol-_sx328_bo1204203200_“Having been abandoned on the steps of an orphanage as an infant, lovable car thief and Dublin charmer Mahony assumed all his life that his mother had simply given him up. But when he receives an anonymous note suggesting that foul play may have led to his mother’s disappearance, he sees only one option: to return to the rural Irish village where he was born and find out what really happened twenty-six years ago.

From the moment he sets foot in Mulderrig, Mahony’s presence turns the village upside down. His uncannily familiar face and outsider ways cause a stir among the locals, who receive him with a mixture of excitement (the women), curiosity (the men), and suspicion (the pious).

Determined to uncover the truth about what happened to his mother, Mahony solicits the help of brash anarchist and retired theater actress Mrs. Cauley. This improbable duo concocts an ingenious plan to get the town talking about the day Mahony’s mother disappeared and are aided and abetted by a cast of eccentric characters, both living and dead.

Himself is a simmering mixture—a blend of the natural everyday and the supernatural, folklore and mystery, and a healthy dose of quintessentially Irish humor. The result is a darkly comic crime story in the tradition of a classic Irish trickster tale, complete with a twisting and turning plot, a small-town rife with secrets, and an infectious love of language and storytelling that is a hallmark of the finest Irish writers.”
