PERSONAL UPDATE

The world is really messed up and broken. Sometimes I’m more surprised when the local news station doesn’t have a story to report about someone in my city being shot or killed. However, just as I should make sure that I’m not desensitized to the deaths of people being senselessly killed in my city and country as well as in many other places across the world, I need to make sure that I remember the things that I should be thankful for as well.

This was a bit of a crazy week at my job. A new project is happening and we’re hoping that it will create positive results throughout many areas. There are a lot of starting components that need to be done, however, and it’s those parts that made work seem busier than usual. Plus, my boss has finally decided who will be taking over my position once I leave for grad school so that’s a bit reassuring and hopefully the transition will be a smooth one.

Now if only finding an apartment with my price range and necessities could go that smoothly.

“WHAT ARE YOU READING?”

Brandon Sanderson’s White Sand by Brandon Sanderson and Rik Hoskin

28862254A brand new saga of magic and adventure by #1 New York Times best-selling author Brandon Sanderson. On the planet of Taldain, the legendary Sand Masters harness arcane powers to manipulate sand in spectacular ways. But when they are slaughtered in a sinister conspiracy, the weakest of their number, Kenton, believes himself to be the only survivor. With enemies closing in on all sides, Kenton forges an unlikely partnership with Khriss — a mysterious Darksider who hides secrets of her own. White Sand brings to life a crucial, unpublished part of Brandon Sanderson’s sprawling Cosmere universe. The story has been adapted by Rik Hoskin (Mercy Thompson), with art by Julius Gopez and colors by Ross Campbell. Employing powerful imagery and Sanderson’s celebrated approach to magical systems, White Sand is a spectacular new saga for lovers of fantasy and adventure.

A Podcast You Need to Listen To

76827

Now, as someone who is about to get her Masters in Counseling Psychology the premise of The Bright Sessions podcast instantly drew me in.

Basically each episodes starts off as a recording a therapy session had by Dr. Bright and one of her patients, the first episode being with Sam, a young woman who believes she can time travel. Now, anyone who has any knowledge of mental health problems is probably already trying to think of what possible diagnosis Dr. Bright should give Sam when…well, the unexpected happens: Sam disappears…right in front of Dr. Bright. I don’t know about anyone else but I would be freaked out but within the first episode we realize that there’s more to Dr. Bright and a lot more to her patients than originally thought…

Think, X-Men plus maybe the bad guy version of the Men in Black.

Yep you read that right, mutants, or as they are called in The Bright Sessions, Atypicals. And if you’re an Atypical, then whether you know it or not, a group called the AM is watching you…

I really love the characters and story line of The Bright Sessions. Since the first few episodes are actual session between Dr. Bright and her patients, you get to understand them and their issues, especially with their powers and learning how to control them. Dr. Bright herself is a bit of a tragic character who tries to delicately balance the protection of her patients from the crueler and less moral side of the AM with her current objective…

The Bright Sessions recently finished with its third season and is currently taking a break until the fall. Until then, check out the first episode of The Bright Sessions (and the cool playlists the creators made for each character) for yourself here.
